Guide to Social Media

When it comes to social media, there’s certainly an art to growing it organically and a lot of people these days think that because using social media is simple, you can post anything to gain followers and engagement. Working in social media myself, I feel as though it would only be right to share my guide to the ever growing social media platforms, which includes using it to promote yourself and a business.

Firstly, I want to start by saying that anybody can be somebody on social media and you shouldn’t be scared of it. In the digital world of today, if you’re using social media to promote yourself then you’re doing the right thing. Here are my six tips for using social media…

Choose the right platforms-

Whether you’re a business or a blogger, when it comes to social media marketing you need to choose the right platforms. If you’re a business, I’d recommend LinkedIn, Twitter and Facebook, depending on who you’re targeting. Whereas, if you’re a blogger I’d say Instagram and Twitter are a must.

Follow relevant people-

If you’re first starting up your social media accounts or have an established platform already then you should definitely follow those who have similar interests to you and those who inspire you. Most of the time they will follow back and may also give you some inspiration. There’s no need to follow random accounts that may not even be of interest to you.

Know how many times you should post-

When posting on social media you don’t want to overkill it by posting too frequently but you also don’t want to post too little and have people forget about you. If you’re posting on Twitter, I’d stick to posting at least three times a day and no more than five. Whereas on Instagram, I personally think one post a day works best. This way, you’re allowing people to engage with your post and giving them time to do so, otherwise you may spam them and the post may get lost in their feed.

Get interactive-

If you want to stand out from the crowd and get more followers then you NEED to stay interactive with your current followers by commenting on their posts, liking their posts and asking questions!

Use Hashtags-

Perhaps one of the most important tips I can give you today is to use relevant hashtags. The amount of times I have seen accounts on Instagram get 100s of likes on some posts and only 10 on others when they don’t use hashtags is very common. Use a maximum of 10 hashtags in the post and you’ll see your post grow very quickly.

Set yourself targets-

Setting yourself targets for your social media honesty does help. For example, I told myself I wanted to be at 1000 Twitter followers by June, I did everything I could to get to that and even managed to exceed it by 250.

By no means am I an expert who has a huge following on social media but as I am working in digital marketing and have grown my own social media accounts by over 1,500 since March I thought it might be useful to those of you who are perhaps just starting out or are wanting to increase your following.

  1. Good tips. 🙂 I’ve been doing most of these things already. Instagram is so darn hard to grow though. I’ve been stuck at the same follower count for weeks now. I definitely prefer Twitter for getting to interact with other bloggers.

  2. Great article! Thanks for the tips. It really is hard to navigate all of these systems. But, in the end you get to know some great people and read great stories. Comments are always so much more meaningful because you put the time and effort into going through everything. If you’d like check out my Social Media article, and tell me what you think. Is there anything I could do to make it better? Thank you! I hope to see more of your posts!

  3. I have a good following on Facebook, and only ventured into Twitter territory when I started blogging. I’m extremely happy with the amount of people following my blog, whereas with Twitter I feel like I’m wading through a sea of treacle! I’ll stick with it though, and hopefully my efforts will start to reap rewards.
